Unsurprisingly, a great name like Gehry will always find voices on both sides of the opinion fence

As a longtime admirer of Gehry’s work, sadly, I find myself among the confused and somewhat dumbfounded.

His latest work – the Guggenheim museum in Abu Dhabi – looks as though it was struck by some terrible calamity. An appropriate name would be “An Implosion”. It’s as though Gehry had a duplicitous agenda.

There’s a fine line between curated chaos and actual chaos. In this case, I think that line was crossed. To me, it looks like an unresolved artwork.

This is not the only architectural letdown by the big 20th century names. Last year, Zaha Hadid architects unveiled a Belgrade skyscraper, which literally stood out like a sore thumb – see below – becoming nothing more than a brand-stamp for the architectural firm, with no connection to place.
