A few words
About me
Sylwia Dziuba: DESIGN CRITIC & WRITER
Her Focus:
Design – especially interiors, objects, furniture and architecture, but also visual culture in general.
Philosopher George Steiner describes criticism as “ordered sight” – not simply declaring what is good or bad but helping audiences see more clearly.
My earliest memories centre around design. The African sculpture hanging on the wall in my grandparents’ lounge or the grandfather clock standing guard in the hallway. I used to fall asleep staring at the cylindrical crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling in our tiny apartment.
As a child, my playground consisted of old castle ruins or construction sites. Great design is a magnet for me – it has a way of reaching deep inside, igniting excitement, curiosity and wonder, all at once.
My professional career and studies never strayed far from creativity – textile design, writing, merchandising, cabinets & joinery design, etc.
But years went by before I was able to crystallise my direction. Now that I’m about to complete a degree in visual culture, I feel ready to contribute to the design conversation. To transition from an observer to student to practitioner to, now, a contributor – as a writer and critic.
My motivation
My contribution is an attempt to bring a fresh perspective to design – a kind of rebellion against outdated narratives, echoing on repeat. I also feel passionate about discovering and introducing new talent to the design scene.
The mid-21st-century is around the corner and my aim is to steer design professionals toward shaping their own unique visual legacy, to inspire the generation to come.
A little bit more about who I am and where I’m from
I am first and foremost a Christian. As such, my analyses are often filtered through a spiritual prism, not just material.
I am a wife, mother and grandmother.
I have a hybrid nationality, Polish and Australian. On some days, I’m more Australian – ordering Smashed Avo at my local cafe; on others, I’m more Polish – give me pierogi!
